Cleric: Arbaeen Practices Unified Living in the Multicultural Islamic World

The head of the International Cultural and Propaganda Committee of Iran’s Seminaries has described the Arbaeen pilgrimage as a practical exercise in unified living within the multicultural and transnational environment of the Islamic world, stressing the need for a universal and inclusive approach in conveying its message.

Hawzah News Agency- Speaking at a conference honoring international Arbaeen missionaries, Hojatoleslam Ahmadi emphasized the global character of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, noting the presence of millions of pilgrims from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds.

“Arbaeen is not confined to a single tribe, nationality, or even a single religion,” he said. “This vast international arena cannot be approached through a narrowly national or localized framework. Even a mere change of language is not sufficient; what is required is a universal outlook and a unifying discourse.”

Referring to the diverse composition of Arbaeen pilgrims, Ahmadi stated that the event brings together people of various nationalities, cultures, tribes, and religions—ranging from Turks, Turkmens, Persians, and Arabs to Shiites, Sunnis, and even non-Muslims. “This diversity,” he said, “is a great divine blessing that must be properly understood, appreciated, and wisely managed.”

Citing remarks by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, the seminary official noted that this coexistence is regarded as a blessing, adding that Arbaeen can therefore be seen as an exercise in “monotheistic living.” He explained that it offers a practical lesson in how believers—and even those of different faiths—can live side by side while moving toward a shared divine goal.

Hojatoleslam Ahmadi stressed that when the message of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), the Master of the Martyrs, is presented in a universal manner, the message of Islam and the Holy Quran also gains global resonance. “With this perspective,” he said, “ethnic, cultural, and linguistic differences fade without being denied or disrespected, and what comes to the fore is the banner of the Ashura movement—a banner that must never be overlooked or weakened.”

He underlined that Arbaeen is inseparable from Ashura, describing it as a continuation of the Ashura epic. “The spirit of Ashura must govern Arbaeen,” he said, adding that the Leader of the Islamic Revolution has consistently presented Arbaeen in connection with Ashura in his speeches. Ahmadi highlighted the pivotal roles of Lady Zaynab al-Kubra (peace be upon her) and Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) as the founders and carriers of this great movement through their perseverance and message-bearing after the tragedy of Karbala.

The seminary official also emphasized the necessity of serious and organized international efforts, carried out with the active participation of Iraqi brothers and sisters. “If the world is to truly know Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and the reality of Islam, one of the most important paths is the Arbaeen of Hussein,” he said.

At the same time, he stressed full respect for the sovereignty of the Iraqi government, the strengthening of religious authority as a fundamental pillar of Iraq’s independence, and honoring the Iraqi people—particularly the tribes and youth who shoulder the main responsibility of hosting millions of pilgrims each year.

In conclusion, Hojatoleslam Ahmadi expressed his appreciation to all Arbaeen missionaries and those involved in international outreach, thanking them for their efforts in promoting the message of Arbaeen on a global scale and contributing to greater understanding and unity in the Islamic world.
